Cascading Moments

Donald McGuire

Beyond the moment. An instant is frozen on our sensor or film. It includes all of the cascading moments and influences that have fallen before. With or without a camera. Here we will explore the connection to those moments and how they inspire our photography as both viewers and makers of images. How will others feel a photo's impact if we don't feel connected with it?

No doubt, like me, you have moments where you don't feel connected. Inspiration is hard to find, and nothing meets your expectations.

Today's ceaseless social media stream results in seeing much but absorbing little. Finding what excites us becomes muted by all of the noise. Going beyond the moment of an 'Insta-glance' at photos creates a mindset in which we think deeper about our own inspiration.

Before even raising the camera to our eye, we should envision what mood, message, or story we want to express. Subconsciously this vision is a product of the photos, films, paintings, books, and music that most resonate with us.

By taking a more in-depth look at our own photos and those of others, we train our visual muscle memory to more readily recognize the light, lines, and moments that ignite our creative switch.
